Typical Urological Disorders Include:
- Loss of Bladder Control
Loss of bladder control can men, women and
children of all ages. Because of the social
difficulties it can create, some people are
uncomfortable talking about loss of bladder
control with a urologist. Instead they deal with
the situation quietly, assuming that nothing can
be done. They may stay at home more, or confine
their activities to an area within a short
distance to a restroom facilities.
Temporary bladder control problems can occur
when you take some medications or suffer injury,
infection, post-surgical weakness, or pregnancy
complications.
Chronic bladder control problems stem from
damage to pelvic muscles, stroke, or may be a
symptom of another disorder, such as diabetes or
a tumor.
The good news is that bladder control problems
are treatable. Nearly all bladder control
problems can be treated with exercise,
medication, or surgery. You are advised to see a
urologist if you experience such problems. A
urologist will review your medical history
and urological complaints to understand your
unique situation and advise appropriate
treatment.
- Impotency
Impotence is a widespread problem that affects
millions of men. It may also occur at any age
and at any time in a man's sexual life. While
impotence is a problem for men, it also affects
couples and families.
A man who is impotent is persistently unable to
get or keep an erection that is firm enough for
sexual intercourse. He may still have the
ability to have an orgasm and father a child,
but often can't get or keep his erection. Many
men in certain situations or at one time or
another during their sexual life are unable to
get or keep an erection. This is considered
normal and does not necessarily indicate a
problem
The good news is that due to recent medical
advances, more and more men are discovering that
they may overcome impotence and the surrounding
feelings of frustration, embarrassment and
tension. Please see a urologist for
further information and advise.
- BPH
Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy(BPH) is a condition
in which the prostate gland becomes very
enlarged and may cause problems associated with
urination. BPH can raise PSA (prostate-specific
antigen) levels two to three times higher than
the normal level. An increased PSA level does
not indicate cancer, but the higher the PSA
level, the higher the chance of having cancer.
Some of the signs of BPH and prostate cancer are
the same, however, having BPH does not seem to
increase the chances of developing prostate
cancer. A man who has BPH may also have
undetected prostate cancer at the same time or
may develop prostate cancer in the future.
Therefore, we recommend that all men over 50
consult their physicians about having a digital
rectal exam and PSA test once a year to screen
for prostate cancer. Please see a physician or
urologist for further information and
advise.
