| Dandruff Dandruff is a disorder of the skin. It is most commonly found on the head, but it also occurs on other parts of the body, causing itching and flaking. While it is usually not a serious condition, it can be socially awkward for some people. Dandruff is most commonly caused by a type of fungus called Malassezia furfur which causes skin to flake. The fungus feeds on fat, so it thrives in areas with oil glands such as the eyebrows and nose.
Other internal and environmental factors may increase dandruff, such as: - Stress
- Hormones
- Increased oil production
- Neurological illnesses eg, Parkinson's Disease
- Genes
- Allergies to certain hair products.
No. Dandruff is not contagious.
In most cases, dandruff can be controlled with a few easy steps:
- Wash hair daily, using a shampoo. This helps particularly if you have an oily scalp.
- Manage stress
- Use less hair styling products
- Have a healthy diet
In more serious cases, medicated or anti-dandruff shampoos can be used to treat this condition. If your dandruff flakes are oily and yellow, it may be a symptom of a more serious condition called seborrheic dermatitis. It is usually red and itchy, and affects the nose, eyebrows and scalp. You are advised to consult your doctor for treatment.
