The healthy vagina contains a variety of microscopic organisms. Normally they live in an acidic environment that prevents the overproduction of any one species and repels foreign elements.

A number of factors can upset this balance: sexually transmitted disease organisms, pregnancy, menopause, certain medications, chronic illness, severe emotional stress, and clothing that holds in body heat and moisture. Diet may also play a significant role.

The best way to prevent vaginal infection is to take good care of yourself. Be sure to eat a healthy, varied diet and maintain your proper weight. Reduce stress through exercise, meditation, and other tension-relieving activities. Be sure your clothing “breathes;” avoid tight garments and fabrics containing a high percentage of synthetic fiber. Use condoms to prevent sexually transmitted infections.

Your vaginal discharge can be examined microscopically by the doctor. If cultures are necessary, the doctor will usually order necessary laboratory tests. The doctor will also need to look into The following:
- Diabetes
- Drugs like steroids, antibiotics
- Too tight clothing
- Excessive moisture

Depending on the findings, the doctor may prescribe medication such as fluconazole (orally), Nystatin vaginal tablets, or ketoconazole, etc.

I recommend you discuss your condition with your doctor in detail. The doctor will need to know your “history” in order to make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe treatment. Report all of your symptoms. Try to recall when you first noted them. Be frank about sexual partners, sexual practices, etc. Doctors know that this information is personal and sensitive and should keep everything you tell them confidential.
