My mother is suffering from kidney stones that she has been unable to
pass. Will drinking lots of water and juice help? Should she
seek medical attention immediately? She is in quite a lot of pain.
Will the stones pass without medical treatment?

| While some kidney stones eventually work their way through the system (and it can take weeks), the pain can be unbearable. If the stone is jagged or large or there is any kind of stricture in the ureter, it can cause hemorrhage and even rupture as it scratches along. If it gets jammed altogether, it can cause very serious damage. Kidney stones also seem to promote kidney infections because they disturb the nice downward/outward flow of the urine and encourage backup into the kidney, etc. Drinking water will help pass the stone if it is moving freely. The best thing is to go to the doctor immediately. They will do an IVP to see the exact number and position of the stones, and whether there is backup of urine or any other resultant problem. They will also test for infection and blood in the urine. If the stone seems to be moving along OK, they may recommend pain relievers and lots of fluids till it passes on its own. If it looks like it is stuck, they can use sound waves passed through the body to break it up into smaller pieces that will pass freely. It is really important that your mother seek attention just in case his stone is stuck and likely to burst the ureter or cause some other serious damage.
